Shaker Arts Council Seeks Presenters for Zoom Webinars

The Shaker Arts Council (SHAC) invites local community members to submit proposals for arts-related lectures/webinars that will be offered during the month of July.July. These events will be presented via Shaker Arts Council’s Zoom account as a part of Stay-in-Place Productions. Webinars will be free and open to the public. SHAC will not be able to compensate presenters; however, we hope that
this opportunity to share your expertise will help give you exposure and promote
your business.

Webinars will be scheduled for one-hour slots. The format will begin with presentations and will be followed with a questions and answer period.
Examples of topics include:
• How to write contracts between artists and patrons
• How to sell your art on Etsy
• Managing stress with the arts
• Navigating your arts career

Applications will be reviewed by the SHAC selection committee upon receipt. The final deadline is June 25, 2020 Applicants will be notified after review by the selection committee. Preference will be given to residentsof Shaker Heights and the Shaker Heights School District and to Shaker
Arts Council members.

Shaker Arts Council Seeks Instructors for Zoom Art Classes

Shaker Arts Council (SHAC) seeks artists and artisans to instruct online community art classes. SHAC is presenting these classes during the month of July via Shaker Arts Council’s Zoom account as part of Stay-in-Place Productions, the arts council’s response to COVID -19. These classes can cover any artistic genre, e.g., dance, cake decorating, jewelry making, painting, writing, drawing, improvisation, music theory, scrapbooking, or even juggling. Classes can be 1-day workshops or 2, 3 or 5 days, depending on the course content. Applications will be reviewed by the SHAC selection committee upon receipt. The final deadline is June 25, 2020 Applicants will be notified after review by the SHAC selection committee. Preference will be given to residents of Shaker Heights and the Shaker Heights School District and to Shaker Arts Council members.

Shaker Arts Council Announces Stay-in-Place Productions

Shaker Arts Council (SHAC) is proud to announce a new initiative, Stay-in-Place Productions, as a response to COVID -19. Now more than ever, SHAC wants to build the community through the arts and build the arts through community. The first activity is to collect and exhibit relevant images seen throughout the community. SHAC is asking residents to take pictures of messages on doors and sidewalks, list the neighborhood where the image resides, and submit to a SHAC online gallery by attaching the images in an email to info@shakerartscouncil.org. The images will be posted SHAC’s website and on all of SHAC’s social media channels. To share on social media using the hashtag #stayinplaceproductions,
please tag or at mention @shakerartscouncil. Follow SHAC and see what is featured
on the social media channels.

Shaker Arts Council Seeks Artists for Art Competition for Utility Box Designs

Building on the success of the Painting the Town utility box project, the Shaker Arts Council (SHAC) is pleased to announce this year’s project: Building Blocks.  SHAC, along with several of Shaker’s neighborhood associations, is sponsoring a juried art competition for the design of utility boxes located in the residential neighborhoods. 
 
SHAC is looking for artists 21 years or older that live or work in Shaker Heights or the Shaker Heights School District.  Designs and applications must be submitted no later than Friday 1 May at 5pm.  For more information and to download the call, application, and template visit www.shakerartscouncil.org.

Shaker Arts Council Presents Boxes Blooming Around Shaker Towne Center and Opening Reception

The Shaker Arts Council (SHAC) is proud to announce the completion of our latest project Painting the Town – the wrapping of utility boxes in the Shaker Towne Center area.  Three of the boxes are located along Chagrin Blvd at the intersections of Avalon, Lee and Chelton Roads.  Two others are on Lee Road at Van Aken and Lomond Boulevards.  A sixth box will be installed October 26, 2019 in front of Stephanie Tubbs Jones Community Center, on Lee Road between Van Aken and Chagrin.  To celebrate these works of art, an open house reception will be held Sunday, November 3, 2019 at Avalon Station, 16800 Van Aken Blvd, Shaker Heights, OH 44120 from 2 - 4 pm.  A map of the location of the boxes ranging from whimsical to the abstract will be available.  Attendees are invited to meet the artists at the reception, tour Avalon Station and learn about our newest initiative – Building Blocks.  The event is free and open to the public.  For more information visit www.shakerartscouncil.org.

Beachwood Arts Council and Shaker Arts Council Present Good Neighbors

Beachwood Arts Council (BAC) and Shaker Arts Council (SHAC) will present Good Neighbors,
a juried art exhibit featuring the work of four Beachwood and four Shaker Heights artists. The
Beachwood artists are Debra Bream, Hazel Brown, John Martin, and Susan Cone Porges. The
Shaker Heights artists are Leslye Discont Arian, Karen Mehling-DeMauro, Kathleen McKenna,
and Tatiana Tate. The artwork on exhibit will include abstracts, landscapes, and portraits, created
in acrylics, charcoal, oils, and pastels.

This art exhibit will be held at the Beachwood Community Center, 25225 Fairmount Boulevard,
Beachwood, OH 44122. The exhibit will open Wednesday, June 5, 2019 with a reception
on Saturday, June 8 from 5 -7 pm. The exhibit continues through Thursday, June 27, 2019.
Gallery hours are Monday– Friday 10 am-4 pm, Saturday 10 am-3pm, and Sunday 10 am-1 p.m.

Shaker Arts Council’s Conversations in Courage: The Visit presented by MetroHeath System

On Sunday, March 24, 2019, MetroHealth System will present the premiere of the Shaker Arts Council’s documentary film, Conversations in Courage: The Visit.  The film, directed by Marquette Williams, depicts the events surrounding Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s 1965 visit to Shaker Heights and includes interviews with many of those involved.  The premiere will be held at.  Tri-C East Simon and Rose Mandel Theatre, 4250 Richmond Road, Highland Hills, OH 44122
 
The afternoon begins at 2:00 pm with a Director’s Reception attended by veteran Civil Rights activists including Edwina Moss, the Reverends Joan Campbell and Albert Pennybacker. The film begins at 3:00 pm followed by a panel conversation moderated by Dee Perry and an audience Q & A.  Tickets for the pre-screening reception are $35 and include a ticket to the screening.  General admission tickets are $5 for students and seniors and $10 for adults.  For reservations and more information, call 216.916.9360.  Tickets can also be purchased at www.shakerartscouncil.org.

Shaker Arts Council Presents Conversations in Courage: A Staged Reading of The Meeting

On Friday, February 22, 2019, the Shaker Arts Council (SHAC) will present Conversations in Courage: A Theatrical Performance of The Meeting, a fictional conversation between Malcolm X and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  The reading will star Peter Lawson Jones as Malcolm X and Greg White as Martin Luther King, Jr. and will be directed by Monica Lee Boone.  The performance will be held at Heights Christian Church, 17300 Van Aken Blvd., Shaker Heights, OH 44120. The evening begins at 7:30 pm, and tickets are $15 for students and $25 for adults.  SHAC members receive a $5 discount.  For reservations and more information call 216.916.9360.  Tickets also can be purchased at www.shakerartscouncil.org.
 
Mr. Jones, a member of SAG-AFTRA and Actor’s Equity, has appeared in nearly 20 films as well as on network television.  His drama, The Family Line, has been successfully produced at Karamu Performing Arts Theatre. His most recent play, The Bloodless Jungle, has enjoyed two full productions at Ensemble Theatre in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, and has received staged readings in Washington, D.C. (John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts 2016 Page to Stage New Play Festival), at the Dallas Convention Center (Black Academy for Arts and Letters Playwright's Spotlight Series), at the 2017 National Black Theatre Festival in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and in Harlem. In his capacity as a business consultant, he works in the areas of government relations, community engagement, event planning, fundraising and fatherhood programming.  From February 2002, through December 2010, Mr. Jones served as a member of the Board of Cuyahoga County Commissioners and for three of those years as its president.  He previously served two and one-half terms in the Ohio House of Representatives and was the Vice-Mayor and a Councilman for the City of Shaker Heights, Ohio.  Mr. Jones has received over 50 awards and honors for his governmental, civic and political work.

Greg White Jr. is a Cleveland actor and director who has been performing in the Cleveland area for a decade.  Among his credits, he has performed the title character of Jelly Belly at Ensemble Theatre, two characters in Lisa Langford’s The Art of Longing  at the Cleveland Public Theatre and has played the role of Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman both at True North Theater and Ensemble Theatre.  In 2015, Mr. White was recognized as Best Actor in Scene Magazine for his performance of Thurgood Marshall in Thurgood and for Superior Achievement by the Cleveland Critics Circle for his performance of Chris Christopherson in Eugene O'Neill's Anna Christie.  Mr. White directed Slow Dance on the Killing Ground at Ensemble Theatre.
 
Monica Lee Boone has theatrical acting, directing, technical and management experience, having previously worked with Play House Square, Tri-C Jazz Fest, Accord Associates, The Cleveland Play House and Karamu Theatre.  Monica was the Educational Coordinator for the opera Blake, the teen domestic violence play him, and an anti-drug play Holiday Heart; all projects used theatre as a way to educate area school students.  Ms. Boone is a Shaker Arts Council Board member, founder of IMAGINE Institute against Teen Domestic Violence, and a member of Rising Phoenix, the Moreland Neighborhood's theater group in Shaker Heights.  She is a longtime advocate for the importance of community theatre in its ability to promote unity and creativity within an accepting environment.

The Shaker Arts Council (SHAC) is sponsoring an art competition for the design of a utility box located on the Vintage Development Group’s Townhomes of Shaker Heights property on Van Aken Boulevard at Sutton and Onaway Roads. SHAC is looking for artists 21 years or older and live or work in Shaker Heights or the Shaker Heights School District. Designs will be displayed and judged at Painting the Town, a gala event being held at the Shaker Country Club on Friday evening, October 5, 2018.
