Shaker Arts Council Announces Winter/Spring Zoom Art Classes and Webinars

Shaker Arts Council (SHAC) announces a Winter/Spring series of community virtual art classes and webinars.  Community art classes specifically geared to K-12 students begin with a Winter Break Session, Monday - Wednesday, December 21-23 and 28-30, 2020.  Another Mini-Session for youths will be offered Monday and Tuesday, February 15-16, 2021.  General classes for students of every age will be offered after-school and on weekends during the 2021winter/spring sessions January 17 - March 20 and March 21– May 30.

SHAC is presenting these classes as part of Stay-in-Place Productions, the arts council’s response to COVID -19.   Classes cover many artistic genres including art with code, drawing, comic art, flamenco dance, mixed media, and theater arts. All are offered within an affordable price range.

There are five free webinars; one featuring a Zentangle demonstration, a webinar on meditation, an introduction to voiceover, the opportunity to create a paper mandala, and an interactive presentation by Little Nosh Productions culminating in homemade Russian tea biscuits.For specific dates, times and to register visit: www.shakerartscouncil.org.

Shaker Arts Council presents a Virtual Holiday Boutique

Shaker Arts Council presents a virtual pop-up shop for the holidays supporting local artists. If you are looking for a unique gift, this is the opportunity for you.   The boutique will run November 28 - December 31, 2020.  The boutique gives you the opportunity to browse and contact the artists directly for sales.  Selections will include accessories, ceramics, drawing, jewelry, mixed media, paper goods, painting and photography.

Shaker Arts Council Seeks Instructors for K-12  Zoom Art Classes

Shaker Arts Council (SHAC) seeks artists and artisans to instruct online community art classes specifically geared to K-12 students.  Beginning with a Winter Break Session, classes will be offered Monday - Wednesday, December 21-23 and 28-30, 2020.

Another Mini-Session will be offered Monday and Tuesday, February 15-16, 2021.General classes for students will be offered after-school and on weekends during SHAC’s winter/spring sessions January 17 - March 20 and March 21– May 30, 2021.

Shaker Arts Council Seeks Presenters for Zoom Webinars

The Shaker Arts Council (SHAC) invites local community members to submit proposals for arts-related webinars that will be offered during September and October.  These events will be presented via SHAC’s Zoom account as a part of Stay-in-Place Productions. Webinars will be free and open to the public.  SHAC will not be able to compensate presenters; however, we hope that this exposure will help give you and promote your business.Webinars will be scheduled for one-hour slots.  The format will begin with presentations and will be followed with a question and answer period.          
Examples of topics include:
•    How to write contracts between artists and patrons
•    How to sell your art on Etsy
•    Managing stress with the arts
•    Navigating your arts career

Applications will be reviewed by the SHAC selection committee upon receipt.  The deadline is August 28, 2020. Applicants will be notified after review by the selection committee. Preference will be given to residents of Shaker Heights and the Shaker Heights School District and to Shaker Arts Council members.

Shaker Arts Council Presents Love Letters via Zoom

On Saturday, August 8, 2020 the Shaker Arts Council (SHAC) will present the play Love Letters.   The two-person play stars Shaker residents and married couple Anaya Farrell and Donald Carrier. The Zoom performance, featuring letters exchanged between two people over a lifetime, will be held at 7:30pm and is a part of Stay-in-Place Productions, the arts council’s response to COVID -19.  The performance is free and open to the public.  Advance registration is required.  For more information and to register visit: www.shakerartscouncil.org.

Mr. Carrier is an actor, teacher and director who has worked extensively in theatre and film across North America. He is the Director of the Case Western Reserve University/Cleveland Play House MFA Acting Program.  His career includes leading performances at the Stratford Festival, the Old Globe, the Shaw Festival, and at Cleveland Play House, he has appeared in Lincolnesque, Noises Off!, Ten Chimneys, In The Next Room, Yentl, The Little Foxes, The Crucible, Luna Gale, All The Way. and Shakespeare in Love. His many film and TV credits include Twice in a Lifetime, The Passion Of Ayn Rand, Hollywood Off-Ramp, The Wives of Windsor, Ready or Not, Dead By Monday and Earth: Final Conflict. His directorial resume includes numerous theaters nationally, and locally at CWRU, Dobama Theatre, The Cleveland Orchestra and the Beck Center.

Anaya Farrell is a professional actor and teacher with extensive film and theatre experience. Her credits include leading roles at the Grand Theatre, the Neptune Theatre, The National Arts Center, The Ford Center for the Performing Arts among many others. As a writer and composer, Ms. Farrell has had a number of her works performed including the musical Evangeline, for which she wrote the music and co-wrote the book and lyrics; Evangeline was developed and presented in concert form by the Stratford Shakespeare Festival. Her Jessie-nominated play The Love Stories has been performed in Canada and the US. Anaya has performed in over seventy film, television, radio and commercial projects and has worked opposite such actors as Brian Dennehy, Treat Williams, Whoopi Goldberg, Christopher Plummer, and Sam Waterston.  Ms. Farrell is a Lecturer in the Case Western Reserve University Department of Theater.

Shaker Arts Council Presents a Virtual Concert Mariama Whyte Sings Broadway

On Saturday, August 1, 2020 via Zoom, the Shaker Arts Council (SHAC) will present Mariama Whyte Sings Broadway. Whether in the recording studio, featured on national stages or crafting a poignant song, Mariama Whyte has the secret recipe that is certain to satisfy even the most discerning palette. A 2019 Verge Fellowship Recipient by Cleveland Arts Prize, Mariama recently starred in the highly acclaimed Dance Nation at Dobama Theatre and Simply Simone: The Music of Nina Simone at national theatrical treasure, Karamu House. She has played leading roles in the Broadway national tours of Disney's The Lion King and The Color Purple.  Mariama has performed on the Oprah Winfrey Show and also has shared the stage with mega-producer David Foster.  As an independent recording artist, she has released several music projects and is completing her new full length album, Hey You It's Me.  Mariama loves working with youth and has served as a teaching artist for a number of performing arts programs throughout Cleveland.

Shaker Arts Council Presents a Virtual Radio Play Performance of The Time Machine

On July 25, 2020 via Zoom, the Shaker Arts Council (SHAC) will present Radio on the Lake Theatre’s radio play performance of The Time Machine. The science- fiction classic is adapted from the story by H.G. Wells, The Time Machine takes listeners on a journey to the year One Hundred Thousand and Eighty and a world where beauty and terror live side by side.  This is a unique opportunity.  The performance gives the viewer the chance to not only hear but also see how special effects are created.  The virtual Zoom performance will be held at 7:00pm and is a part of Stay-in-Place Productions, the arts council’s response to COVID -19.  The performance is free and open to the public.  Advance registration is required.  For more information and to register visit: www.shakerartscouncil.org.
 
Radio on the Lake (ROTLT) Theatre is dedicated to the preservation, creative development and educational outreach of the radio theater genre.  Caroline Breder-Watts  (Executive Director, ROTLT; Director) has enjoyed a diverse career in the arts for the past 30 years, with projects in radio, theater and film.  For many years she has had experience as a radio host and producer for public radio both in Ohio and Florida. 
 
John Watts (Artistic Director, ROTLT/Sound Effects Artist) has spent the past 25 years as a world–wide producer for both audio and video productions. John was nominated in 2019 for the Broadway World Regional Award for Best Sound Design.

There are two free webinars; one featuring a demonstration by Methany Weir Painted Finishes experts, and the second, a presentation by Peter Lawson Jones offering tips on building your acting career.
