Shaker Arts Council (SHAC) presents The Art of Reading Book Club
The saying goes “A picture is worth a thousand words “so let’s explore that! Come spend a cozy and casual evening discussing an eclectic mix of books with art related storylines, explore the images they showcase and the times they reflect. Pre read the book or just join for the experience of connecting with fellow art lovers. Free and open to everyone. Advance registation is required for each individual date. Until we can visit art in person again, we can do this. With Margaret Reardon.

Sheri Lawrence

Sheri Lawrence is a teaching artist with a Masters in Art Education and a B.F.A. in illustration. She has taught art to K- 8th for ten years and has illustrated children’s books. Prior to teaching she was a graphic designer at the Shaker Library and freelanced for the City of Shaker Heights. She currently has a collection with Vida where her artwork is printed on products for home and apparel click here to view. Nicole Coury
Nicole is a Cleveland-based actress who holds degrees in Theatre Arts and Psychology from Case Western Reserve University. Some favorite performance credits include I’m Alive ... (Lang) with Nightbloom Theatre Company, and Aida (ensemble/fight captain) at Karamu House. She has also worked as a Teaching Artist for Cleveland Public Theatre.

Beginning Scene Study - Canceled
Program Description: Learn to create interesting, three-dimensional characters through script analysis, outside research and inspiration, and collaboration. During week one we will go over some acting fundamentals, then by week two we will jump right into script analysis. The class will culminate in polished, performance-ready scenes that are presented over Zoom.

Handcrafted Paper Art - Concluded
Program Description: Create a hand-crafted object out of paper, flour, water and decorate!  Paper mache can be used to build masks, wall art, pencil holders, vases, even model animals! We’ll build our frame from newspaper/circulars and small amount of flour paste. The second session we cover our creations in paper mache.  The last day we decorate the dried object using paint or materials from around the house.

How to Create a Graphic Novel
Program Description: Whether you like to write, to illustrate, both or neither (but you’re interested in learning to develop, writing and illustration skills), you can produce a mini graphic novel. This class takes a step-by-step approach to creating a graphic novel taking place in each student’s hometown, developing a clear narrative, drawing engaging characters, producing a story-board and formatting the final work.

Program Description: Create fun and funky postcards or greeting cards using materials easily found at home! Upcycle empty cracker boxes or cereal boxes along with art supplies already you have to make cheerful postcards you can send to your friends, family, and neighbors.

Peter Lawson Jones
Peter Lawson Jones , a member of both Actors’ Equity and SAG-AFTRA, has appeared in over twenty films (White Boy Rick, Alex Cross), on network television (ABC’s Detroit 1-8-7) and on stages throughout Northeast Ohio. He has authored two plays, The Bloodless Jungle and The Family Line. Peter received the 2016 Indie Gathering International Film Festival Best Ohio Supporting Actor Award.

Graffiti: Text as Image - Canceled
Program Description: Graffiti is ubiquitous in major cities, but more than being an eyesore, it has actually gone through it's own artistic evolution. This series will explore how graffiti artists develop letters and how the interaction between text and image can be blurred. We will learn how to draw block letters as well as using color, shape, and line to express our own personal message.

Creative Visions
Ages: 9 - 18
Program Description:  This course sparks imaginative thinking and processing through creative expression.  Classes will focus on identifying and developing each individual students’ creative energy, allowing them the stage to express that creativity through artistic options.  Each class will focus on a selected medium, such as paint, pastels, markers, watercolor paint and color pencils.  An additional materials fee of $25 is payable to instructor at first class.

Epoxy Resin Jewelry
Ages: 18+
Program Description: Transform epoxy resin into a unique jewelry medium using coloring agents and collage materials. We will explore this medium by making  a broach in our first project.  No jewelry skills required.  An additional materials fee beginning at $18 must be payable to instructor at first class (fee varies depending on selection of base jewelry).

Handheld Stories (Hand Casting + Object + Sound Art)
Ages: 10+
Program Description: This workshop is designed for people who are new to life casting and are interested in applying sound in artworks. Students will cast their own hand and bring a handheld object. The instructor will then guide participants to audio record their voices while telling stories hidden behind the objects. In the final section, students will be introduced to a microcontroller board and learn to connect sound to artwork. Through the workshop every object held in each plaster hand will be assembled as a collaborative
artwork. The voices of participants telling stories contained in the objects will be displayed and shared to the whole community when the audience touches the plaster hand sculptures. Additional $30 materials fee payable to instructor at first class.

Painting with Pastels
Ages: 55+
Program Description:  This course entails learning how to paint with pastels using traditional and contemporary methods, including sketching, field trips to local sites, learning how to handle and care for pigments, brushes, pencils, and instruction in contemporary materials safely.  Find the joy and pleasure of translating what you see into a picture on paper and fabric.
