Trail Tales: Art Competition for a Public Sidewalk Display

Call for Artists

The Shaker Arts Council (SHAC) is pleased to announce Trail Tales, a new project in partnership with the Shaker Heights Public Library.  Planned to open in June, this exhibit will be the first of an ongoing series of Trail Tales; the artwork will change two-to-three times each year.  Artwork will be presented as a series of images arranged sequentially in front of the Bertram Woods branch library for the public to enjoy.  SHAC is sponsoring an art competition for the images to be displayed.  The inaugural project will feature photography and will celebrate Shaker Reads, the Library’s annual summer reading program

For this first show, local photographers are invited to participate.  Future exhibit calls for artists will ask for other 2D media.  Artists may submit up to five [5] samples of their work with the application using the online form.  Materials are due no later than 5pm, Friday 10 April, 2026.

Eligibility: Applicants must be at least 18 years old and either live or work in Shaker Heights, reside in the Shaker Heights School District, or be members of the Shaker Arts Council.  Learn how to become a member here.

A committee of professional local artists will select the participants.  These participants will be asked to design more than one display.  Final work for the exhibit must be formatted to fit the 18 x 24 layout.  Artists retain all copyrights to their artwork.  Artists whose designs are selected will receive a $150.00 stipend per display panel.  Final works must be submitted to SHAC via email ([email protected]) no later than 5pm, Friday 8 May 2026.

Design Criteria: Final designs must be submitted as camera-ready, 600 dpi files.

By submitting samples of work, all artists agree to:
  • allow SHAC to photograph the work;
  • allow SHAC to use images of the final original photographs on printed materials, websites and social media for promotional purposes only;
  • allow SHAC to submit the proposed designs to the city’s Architectural Board of Review (ABR) for its final approval and agrees to modify the design as proposed by the ABR, if necessary.

Artists whose works are not selected are welcome to ask SHAC for feedback.
