A photographer with a contemporary portrait vision using classical methodology, photography book collector with over 2,000 volumes in his personal library, photographic historian, writer and collector, 4th generation Clevelander and 3rd generation Shaker resident, Herbert Ascherman has created a life in Photography.
2016 is a banner year for Herb with the Cleveland opening of no less than six exhibitions.
Photographed in both traditional silver gelatin and the in the resurgent art of hand -made Platinum printing (patented in 1873), Herb’s one man exhibitions have covered topics as diverse as: A black and white portrait exhibition of Cleveland’s autistic artist Seth Chwast, an exhibition of vintage black and white prints taken in Paris in the 1980’s, a platinum exhibition of the Forest at Fontainebleau, a platinum study of Shaker Height’s Halle House, and a conceptual portrait show of 1st Responders. 2016 will culminate with a massive 60+ print 40-year retrospective exhibition of never seen images from Herb’s archives.
